HEX is a project of two producers / artists from London, Charlie Noon and Tom Field. This self-titled debut release finds them frantically cutting and combining genres of electronic music into a fierce whole. A firm core of low bass and propulsive beats will typically be surrounded by digital detritus, extra beat flurries and half-heard samples. Bold stuff on Liberation Technologies.
8/10 Ant Staff review, 07 April 2016
Mute’s Liberation Technologies unleash the debut EP from HEX. This sits reasonably comfortably in what I’ve been recently referring to as ‘Transformer Grime’. i.e electronic music that rhythmically borrows from Grime/ dubstep with a sound palette of clanging metal percussion that sounds like robots doing Kung Fu with bits of shrapnel flying off everywhere or something.
It’s all pretty intense and menacing, taking in elements of industrial, techno, noise and rave. A bit like early Dizzee Rascal getting bludgeoned by Ancient Methods maybe? Oh gawd I dunno, it’s pummeling my skull right in though - with plenty of clever sound design to boot. If you’re into Rabit, Visionist, SD Laika, Amnesia Scanner, M.E.S.H. etc. give it a whirl.
