Conquest Play / Clockwork by Ramleh

An exclusive and very limited vinyl 12” from industrial titans Ramleh. These British experimentalists have been dabbling in power electronics, harsh noise and rock structures since the early 1980s and the rest of musical culture is only just catching up. One side of Conquest Play/Clockwork has the dizzying electronic line-up and the other has the aggro rock setup, so everyone’s happy.

First time listening to Ramleh. Fucking. Hell. The needle had barely hit the wax when a full-on wall of grotesque industrial noise abruptly bursts forth from Lucifer’s trapped nerve and it’s pure pain. They look like they’ve been around for a while making more band-oriented noise in the 80s, while here there’s a clear emphasis on the noise itself, whatever the source, as long as it’s completely numbing. ‘Conquest Play’ contains synths that are audibly creaking, buckling under the weight of the outrageous things being demanded of them.

Low rumbles grumble at a multitude of distortions to achieve this cathartic racket, before some hideous remnant of a guitar or bass tries to make itself heard in the second half. Things get much more rhythmic on ‘Clockwork’ (obviously), it sounding like the harsher side of Can jamming with Throbbing Gristle while being thrown through Shit & Shine’s pedal collection. It’s premium chug and highly recommended for the noisers out there.
