The Tapes finally get the reissue treatment with this double LP compilation of extremely rare Italian industrial and no-wave music. The Ecstatic label are pressing the material on Selected Works 1982 - 1992 to vinyl for the very first time. On this compilation the duo blend hardware synths and noisy drones to create a woozy, DIY electronic music.

The only thing I’ve heard previously by The Tapes was their track that featured on the recent-ish ‘MUTAZIONE - Italian Electronic & New Wave Underground 1980-1988’ compilation on Strut. This valuable 21-track collection of Italian post-industrial music has been compiled by Alessio Natalizia aka Not Waving and is a welcome document in highlighting and preserving their legacy. Spanning their evolution over a ten year period it’s possible to detect how their influences (Cabaret Voltaire, William Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, John Foxx etc.) would be absorbed and later distilled into the work of this compilations curator.
Mixing up everything from cold-wave, proto-techno, tape collage, primitive and crude electro and so on, it’s a welcome insight into the work of this obscure duo and also the 80’s Italian DIY cassette culture. There’s so much to absorb it’s pretty overwhelming but if you’ve a penchant for early Cabaret Voltaire or Throbbing Gristle just check out the sludgy dubbed out ‘Il Tempuio’ for a taste or ‘Low Gear’ which sounds like Conrad Schnitzler remixing ‘Hot On The Heels Of Love.
