I’ve often fantasized that the earth, rocks and even the air could capture and record past events in the same way as magnetic tape stores audio and video. Kate Carr’s ‘It Was A Time Of Laboured Metaphores’ cassette on Jim Haynes’ The Helen Scarsdale Agency label almost feels like a utility or portal into unlocking past events that have been etched into the very fabric of the listeners space. There’s something remarkably ghostly about this tape; past lives and events are beamed into the present with a vivid clarity that’s akin to some sort of advanced regression therapy.
Being immersed in the audio is quite an experience; somehow things feel familiar and yet ambiguous. There really is something more to this than your average drone and collaged field recordings effort. There’s a real stirring, fragile beauty to the sound palette that really resonates and the lasting, haunting effects of the album have my brain working on overload attempting to process questions like; is time linear? Do we live in a world with parallel dimensions? Are ghosts something we project ourselves? ‘It Was A Time Of Laboured Metaphores’ feels like a tiny peek behind the curtain.
