The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars marks the point where Bowie really caught people’s attention. Bowie appeared as an androgynous weirdo from outer space – this wouldn’t have worked on its own (take Babylon Zoo, for example) but he just happened to have utterly brilliant songs and an imaginative concept to back up his penchant for dressing up and wearing make-up. There’s a diverse selection on display here: the perfect ‘70s pop hits such as “Starman”, the rock ‘n’ roll steam train that is “Suffragette City”, the soulful brilliance of “Lady Stardust”, the glam rock of “Hang On To Yourself” and the anthemic “Moonage Daydream”. Not to mention the rifftastic title track. There are very few artists who could make an album like Hunky Dory one year then follow it up the next with an album of this quality.
