Here’s a split between Irish group Ginnels and excellently-named new band Tangible Excitement! (the exclamation mark is part of the name). Fizzy, energised indie-pop from both sets of players: Ginnels just about have the edge on jangle though. Pressed to various different colours of vinyl: which one you get will be a surprise… On Emotional Response.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 10 March 2016
Here’s a split on the ever-busy Emotional Response label. Tangible Excitement are a 'supergroup' made out of members of Veronica Falls, Lucksmiths, Boyracer and more. Their opening track ‘Northland Food Court’ transcends this genre with a superb slice of acoustic-pop with the sort of mariachi horns that Love or Belle and Sebastien would be proud of. Nothing else approaches this level of excellence but it’s enjoyably bouncy indie pop music nonetheless. ‘Effectively Wild’ will certainly appeal to fans of Boyracer with thrashing guitars and sugar-sweet melodies.
Overleaf Ginnels (snickets to you Lancashire folk) play a similar brand of exuberant pop music with nods to '70’s power pop and '90’s noise-pop. This seems to have all been done by one Mark Chester with the exception of the drums and he makes a fair old racket and sings melodically over the top. Closer ‘Reason to Be Helpful’ has the hint of Joe Jackson about it. True!
Fans of the '90’s Slumberland releases should take note.
