You can count on DeepChord to live up the project name: each of these 3 beat excursions take it down low, the synths and the drum pulses echoing up to the listener as if from the bottom of a cavern. That’s particularly true of the last track, which sounds extra hazy. Atmospherica Vol. 2 is out on the Soma label.

In memory of Rod Temperton (writer of ‘Thriller no less) I'm going to head straight towards another musical Rod with a quick listen to the latest dispatches from Rod Modell’s Deepchord project. I had earlier today explained to young Laurie that finding new and interesting things in life can only lead to disappointment so you should stick to what you know. Thankfully for lovers of dreamy dub techno everywhere our Rod sticks to this rule like glue.
His latest offering contains three new pieces of atmospheric techno that hazes into view as it the whole thing has been covered in some kind of autumnal murk. There are two ‘beaty’ tracks and one shorter beatless heat hazer. ‘Exploring the North’ (good idea) is particularly lovely and envelops you like the distant roll of Pendle Hill might when heading up the M66. On the flip ‘Pinewood Lodge’ is more colourful and pulsing yet still retains an air of mystery. How Rod does this time and again I’ve no idea. There are surely only so many atmospheres you can dredge up, the closing 'Shot Point' is the arrival at the destination, waves lapping on the shore as you turn the key in your lakeside cabin
