The first release on Leeds-based label Navy Cut, Speak Back is a selection of heavy and minimal sound-system tunes from Submotion Orchestra’s Leo James. The A side is dominated by Shanee’s rich trip-hop inspired vocals and the B side is a moody piece of dub that borrows guitar from Quark’s Ed Gooden. This vinyl 12” also includes a remix from Egoless.

Straight outta the mean streets of Leeds comes this 12" from Submotion Orchestra's Leo James which contains one original and two remixes of said original.
'Speak Back' is a lovely minimal piece of clanking digi dub with evocative vocals that allow plenty of space for dub effects to flit across the mix. The track has the sodium lit atmosphere of walking around bleakest Leeds late at night. Trust me I've been there. It's the sort of track which has something of Massive Attack about it but also delves into the murky underworld of terrifying suburban sound systems.
Overleaf there's a lovely dub version using sounds so soft my ears will be thanking me for months. Kind of like listening to the Chapeltown reggae festival from the comfort of your own pillow. Finally, there's a remix from Egoless which squishes up the vocals and adds haunt-a-piano for something that goes in the most wonderful lop sided way. Great 12".
