Chicago house legend Larry Heard is breathing life into his classic alias Mr. Fingers after a decade long hiatus. On this vinyl 12”, simply titled Mr. Fingers 2016, Heard re-imagines the sounds he helped pioneer. Heard always produced the deepest of deep house, calling back to disco and funk. This element is still present, but combined with kosmische synths and sharper percussion. It’s like he never went away.

These are the first Mr. Fingers productions from Chicago house music Godfather Larry Heard in over ten years. His recent return to the alias has also seen him remixing Simoncino on L.I.E.S. and with imminent represses of remastered versions of his seminal Trax productions ‘Washing Machine’ and ‘Slam Dance’ it’s a good time to be either a devotee or late to the party.
This 4-track EP really updates his classic sound for the 21st Century. Opening with the late night melancholy, slow bubbling, celestial acid of ‘Outer Acid’ and then onto the gorgeous, soul stirring ‘Qwazars’.
On the flipside, is the moody, slow creeping introspective ‘Nodyahead’ with rattling metallic percussion and minimal, funked up bassline. I can take or leave the final cut ‘Aether’ which is a bit coffee table chill out jazz for me -- but the other tracks are all winners in my book. The very occasional vocal here and there adds it little something extra to these tracks and the production is immaculate throughout.
