BGM by Yellow Magic Orchestra

BGM is the extremely influential 1981 release from Japanese synth-pop eccentrics Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s gurgling synthesizers mesh with motorik drum machines and the catchiest melodies you have ever heard. This reissue from Music on Vinyl comes on 180 gram wax and the first 1000 pressed are also on transparent vinyl. The dense pop-experimentalism of this record is still shocking.

8/10 Jamie 9th January 2018

This album is a great representative for the era of synth based music that came out of the 80s. Similar to bands such as Japan or, going back slightly earlier, Kraftwerk. In my opinion Yellow Magic Orchestra are one of the most important, yet unnoticed influencers for many modern bands today, such as a band like Metronomy. This album is a perfect example of the Carib ileitis of YMO. Much of the music is frantic and has strong attitude resulting in something truly unique that will be sure to keep you dancing.
