‘EP2’ despite the potentially confusing title is actually the fourth vinyl outing on The Trilogy Tapes from this London duo.
Opening with the Detroit techno of ‘Afyon’ with rough as a badgers arse lo-fi production - sounding like a moldy Derrick May tape retrieved from down the back of the old kangaroo pouch (cockney rhyming slang for couch you nougat) that’s been festering there since 1990. It’s a pretty lush track all things considered, really capturing the spirit of early Transmat (I think I’ve said that before about one of their tunes).
Second tune ‘Hey Hugo’ has a little ‘Hey’ vocal sample that did my nut in a wee bit, a big woozy disorientating synth, rugged drums and soulful keys.
‘Zik Zik’ is a sweet tune and all… so maybe like imagine Jamal Moss raw production values (but dirtier) applied to early B12’s interpretation of halcyon days of foundation Detroit techno.
‘Noklue’ channels early UK breakbeat hardcore were it reproduced from hazy memories of decaying pirate radio tapes and low radio signal strength - complete with a pretty synth that flutters along like a butterfly trapped in a rave. If you’ve been into previous EP’s it’s a no brainer, like.
