8/10 Laurie Staff review, 07 January 2016
Tapu is the label of Michel Banabila, featuring the music of Michel Banabila and sometimes others, as this sampler will reveal. On this 2CD set, an impressive and extensive array of music can be heard, featuring a plethora of musicians at the forefront; this is not just the Banabila show.
It makes sense then that Banabila has been composing since the early 80s, the mastery of instrumentation and production on this betraying years of musical messing. Over the course of the CDs you’ll hear some kinda new age, thematic mood sounds with an interesting fragmented ambience that hangs in the background, leaving room for other instruments such as the viola (played by Oene van Geel), drums, and various electronics (from Machinefabriek) to sit over it all. ‘Jump Cuts’ is interspersed with the sound of electroacoustic animal cries while a beat thuds on confrontationally. ‘Narita’ sounds like it could be from a climactic moment in a Danny Boyle film, just with some glitches flitting about and none of the Hollywood bollocks. Distorted tone chunks drift across the earspace while something gentle twinkles in the distance, fading out and leaving quite an impression.
OK so I’ve spent a while on this so don’t have time to get to disc 2, but it’s some tasty stuff indeed.
