EP the second from Blossoms, Stockport’s finest new indie beat combo. Charlemagne's title track (are they using the first Holy Roman Emperor as a love metaphor? We can only hope so) is a short, high-powered anthem, utilising 80’s pop synths and vocals to maximum effect. 10” vinyl EP on Virgin EMI.

Before I listened to this I could never imagine that there was actually a sweet spot midway between Taylor Dayne and Suede but with this, their second single, Stockport Blossoms have managed to hit it. 'Charlemagne' is insanely poppy with a nagging synth riff that reminds me of my teenage bus journey's to the Metro Centre circa '88. The vocals however are less of the enormo busted, massive lipped Dayne and more of the rakish fop of a Brett Anderson. I'm hearing a smidge of Arctic Monkeys in the middle eight but this chorus is pure Now That's What I Call Music 21. Wonder what the rest is like?
