Another unique release from the esteemed Ghost Box label. This heavyweight vinyl 7” from ToiToiToi is an eccentric blend of drum machines and homemade synthesizers. The two tracks on Other Voices 07 are a perfect fit for the small-town psychedelia and library music of Julian House and Jim Jupp’s label. It’s also beautifully packaged and includes a download code.

No ghosts haunt ToiToiToi’s latest 7”, but with their hands over their mouths and their toy instruments set up in the far end of the room, you might wonder just how corporeal they actually are. This old-school, Kraut-grooved pop treat has its melodies muffled and its production obscured, letting some parts diverge from the other to give you the feel of being the centrepiece in a weird and wacky world. “Odin’s Jungle” is a gorgeous tune that switches in and out of different phases like pinball-controlled clockwork, with glockenspiel melodies and sleuthing keyboards bouncing the song around from purpose to purpose.
“Golden Green” follows, allowing a nylon-stringed guitar performance to filter in through the hauntology lexicon’s mix of flute, chirping birds that sound like they’ve been kept in a library, stoic spoken word and clicking percussion. It doesn’t have the same addictive results as “Odin’s Jungle”, though it does basically the same thing, collating different strands of chill music and drenching them in an ineffable nostalgia. When ToiToiToi get lucky, they make beautiful pop music; the rest of the time they make pretty good background jam.
