Ex-Stereolab frontman releases heavyweight 7” vinyl on Ghost Box. Has a more perfect sentence ever been written? Tim Gane’s Cavern of Anti-Matter beam shimmering guitar lines and motorik grooves straight from who-knows-where. We do know the rich guitar and synth jams were recorded especially for this series and that, as always, Ghost Box package it impeccably.

Tim Gane’s back at work here, the ex-Stereolab chemist now joining forces with spook university Ghost Box for one in their series of 7”s. The result of a Real Estate-inspired instrumental on inevitable collision course with beams of synth that sound as grand as an old, room-filling moog synth, “Pulsing River Velvet Phase” scours the debris for melodies and motifs. The tones of the introductory guitar and the squealing synths offer both a laziness, as well as a vastness, as if we’re orbiting space from the comfort of our sofas.
On the second side, the vintage vibes get a little more excitable, though those guitar additives remain, reminding us of the swell job a Stereolab song could do of feeling propulsive, punky and pretty all at once. With a riff that trails away like “Desire Lines” and a Krautrock rhythm that makes me dream of artificial sports drinks that don’t exist yet, I can’t help but feel really healthy listening to this one. Soak those rays in, even if this is the Truman show and that sunshine is just a giant floodlight.
