The Spook School are a gang of pop-punk enthusiasts making enthusiastic pop-punk. They’ve been making waves since their debut album Dress Up, released a couple of years ago, but they still sound grounded and direct. Binary addresses the nonsense of rigid gender norms, embracing genderqueer and non-binary identities to a sing-along chorus! Hooray! Yellow 7” on Fortuna Pop.

The sound of this Spook School record is a quite cool mix between Iggy Pop and Stephen Pastel. One of their best songs ’Binary’ has been re-recorded to reflect this and... well... they just weren't overly enamoured with the first version. 'Binary' is well worth the double stamp and is a catchy way to explain in song that we don’t all fit into boxes. I like this method of education through song.   Amazingly given this weeks news the B side is called ‘David Bowie Songs’  - something we’ve been listening to a lot of recently and it is further catchy indie pop with the singer wishing he could love someone as much as David’s songs. I know the feeling  - I find it hard to love anyone as much as I love ‘Girl Daredevil‘ by the Bomb Pops. I guess I've just got to live with it.

I stumbled on The Spook School playing in Edinburgh in 2015 - their set was full of fast pop-punk songs, energy and Scottish accents (that I don't mind, because it's just like mine). One of the stand out tunes was 'Binary' - a reference to the gender binary that is society's imposition rather than the way, as individuals, we see ourselves. According to Nye, the writer and singer, we should reject the imposition, embrace the diversity and recognise that gender identity is 'complicated' - and he's right, even if we don't all have the courage.

This song has a purpose. This song has a hook (01, 01, 01-01!!!) This song has a slogan : I am bigger than a hexadecimal i.e. I am NOT binary. This song has a soaring crescendo that should get you bopping round your bedroom and reaching for the repeat switch - and all coming in this case in lovely yellow vinyl!!! This is one of a number of the band's splendid songs, delivered with heart - emotional, beautiful and jump up and downable!
