Anthony Child has released a bunch of stuff under the name Surgeon and is usually known for his beat-heavy recordings. On Electronic Recordings from the Maui Jungle Vol. 1 however, the feel and the tone of the developing drones are emphasised and electronic sounds meet the sounds of nature. Double LP and CD onEditions Mego.

9/10 Ant Staff review, 12 November 2015

Anthony Child aka Surgeon once again dispenses with the beats as he did on his brilliant 2013 ‘The Space Between People and Things’ LP on NNA Tapes. Here utilizing modular synthesizer to display a remarkable sensitivity to timbre and texture across this epic double album. A glance of the sleeve and title and you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a set of field recordings. Indeed there are occasional sounds captured from the jungle scattered amongst the drones but this is really the environment channeled through the circuits. Some of the arpeggios are really soul stirring evoking the spirit of Terry Riley. Highly recommended.

9/10 Gregor Omelasz Customer review, 27th January 2017

Much like a time in your life where nothing is what it seems and nothing is where it should be, this record (and its 2nd Volume) takes you somewhere abandoned long ago, like the Maui jungle perhaps(!).

This is like a poppier version of Alva Noto's Xerrox series and that's really not a bad thing. It's also a lot cleaner than those releases, which is also not a bad thing. All in all, this is one of the best Editions Mego releases along with its counterpart released last year, value for money is abundantly clear in this album, and it's well worth the 2+ hour ride.
