DJ Paypal is here with Sold Out, stretching the pun as far as it can go there. Going for pure fun in a footwork world, this is his debut for Brainfeeder and the music is a mix of fast tempo remixes of genres such as jazz and salsa combining EDM and hip hop elements. Sold out? We'll see. Should be.
8/10 Laurie Staff review, 03 December 2015
You can now officially name your DJ persona after anything. This guy’s choice of using the financial service that helps drive the Norman engine as his name is a silly one, but with a record name like ‘Sold Out’ you can’t help but chuckle. Besides, if you manage to get past the name, and I strongly urge you to, you will find some scattery footwork genius that is both multi-layered and multi-amazing. Multi-Love?
The beats come thick and fast on the manic ‘AHHHHHHHH’, with oozy chords alternating between gliding over the top or splintering into 1000 pieces, the drum machines capturing that fast-but-hypnotic thing, lots going on but the pulse moving way more slowly than the hats. Those who crave masterful sampling will find everything they love here. ‘Sold Out’ is like Steve Reich if he chose to immerse himself in the Juke scene instead of high composition, or chilled with Rashad. Imagine. Some pitched up vocals are used as a machine-gun speed keys line to mingle with the more restrained drums. ‘Slim Trak’ is ridiculous, with 2 imaginary groups of women having a singing standoff between the left ear and the right in triple time, eventually giving up and singing the same raucous phrase. This one has the BPM whacked right up, so it makes sense to drop it down for ‘Awakening’, which doesn’t last as the jazz loops get flung around your head at an alarming speed. Forget your Hudson Mohawkes.
