After releasing his excellent debut LP, Rivers of the Red Planet last year, Max Graef has become a man in demand. Here he’s in collaboration with Glenn Astro and I couldn’t think of a much better collaboration than that. Magic Johnson is the result, a danceable, percussive jam with links to jazz and funk but feeling really modern.

- Magic Johnson by Max Graef & Glenn Astro
8/10 Andy Customer review, 19th December 2015
This is an exciting time for leftfield dance music, parallels with the broken beat scene of a decade or so ago are evident as we see producers mix jazz, deep house, hip hop, funk, disco and boogie. Max Graef and Glenn Astro have put out some incredible records via the Money $ex and Box Aus Holz labels in Germany whilst in London Henry Wu, Anthony Dobson and co have been driving a Peckham sound along the same musical lines.
This release sees Ninja Tune get on the sound. Jazz-House became a little coffee table last time round, however in the hands of the new breed there is an experimentation that keeps things bumping and unpredictable.
This is jazz for a red light lit basement with a big speaker stack. Heavy bass and kicks add real weight to the melodies, the Magic Johnson track is likely to soundtrack many deep house session this winter. This is highly recommended.
