Clint is continuing to occupy the role of teacher who tells his class their homework for the week is to go out and have fun, so he’s sent me over this jazz-jewelled dance party for review. The Comet Is Coming is the new rhythmically engaging project from Melt Yourself Down saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, plus some synthing and percussion-pounding from members of Soccer96. In summation, these are professional party-compactors, and ‘Prophecy’ is as impressive as it is joyous.

It starts on the kind of frenetic promise of Melt Yourself Down, a tightly collaborative track that refuses to give up an inch of its rigid structure. Before long, though, the band delve down darker paths: the squeaking synth of “Cosmic Serpent” is joined with shackled drumming and a forlorn sax melody that seems to take the record’s momentum down a few floors on the elevator. It merges seamlessly into the spoken word treatise “Final Days of the Apocalypse”, which worries at faster tempo with zero beatwork. Suddenly, the record sounds more like one of Colin Stetson’s feared and revered landscapes than one MYD’s good times.

Flip it over and the trio sound like Tortoise playing a video game on the blistering “Neon-Baby”, one of the year’s best attempts at combining high-tech jamming with actual good times. The final track rumbles contentedly back into a second gear, offering a come down, but not a full stop -- the tempo is dulled, with hands clapping like yawns, but Hutchings' sax flies off the wall. Whatever The Comet Is Coming are doing, it has to at least make your ears want to party.
