Previously only available as a CD of only 100 copies, the fantastic Soul Jazz Records bring us The Acid Documents by Hieroglyphic Being on coloured double vinyl LP limited to 1000 copies. The music is a collection of odd-ball, DIY-electronica with echoes of Frankie Knuckles and Sun Ra. Strange, pulsating and enthralling electro.

8/10 Ant Staff review, 12 November 2015

‘Acid Documents’ was originally issued as a limited edition CDr back in 2013 and has now been vinylized on coloured wax in an edition of 1000 copies. Plus there’s a proper glass mastered CD too - both with remastered audio. What you get is ten cuts of raw cosmic, jams in signature Jamal Moss style, warts and all.

Third track ‘Fabian Society’ is a highlight and has the feel of a tune on his +++ label I just can’t remember the name of. Jamal is extremely prolific and I often wonder if some stricter self editing would make his catalogue stronger; like I get the feeling almost every jam just gets put out there. But among them are some real diamonds if you wade through. Having said that it’s kinda interesting listening to the way he works, you get the idea he probably very rarely or never revisits stuff for post production once it’s recorded - live improvisations captured and then moving forward to the next idea.

These recordings really do capture the spirit and unique energy with which he plays. There’s a few tunes on here that make it worth picking up - ‘E Clampus Vitas’ is a banger and ‘Illuminates Of Thaneteros’ is brilliantly intense. Generally speaking though a lot of ‘Acid Documents’ just sounds like him playing around on Re-Birth and the acid doesn’t really sound like it’s coming out of a TB- 303 and sounds kinda plasticy. Not that I’m some kinda militant acid purist or anything - that’s how it sounds to me. Still, when Jamal Moss is on fire he’s one of my favourite artists currently making electronic music and within some tracks here are glimpses of his brilliance.
