Some old Anodyne material here, dug up from the Skam archives. “Dirty, old and skanky” they promise in their press release, which is bound to please the faithful. Restarter Hazard X is packed full of breakbeat-heavy tracks in the style Anodyne himself describes as “Noise Terrorism”. CD on Skam.

8/10 Staff review, 05 November 2015

What do you do in the winter months? Gather round the fire and talk about brighter times? Try to ferment as many berries as possible to get pissed rustic-style? Gather round the fire and talk about darker times? The cheeky folks at SKAM, always keen to tell you how to do things, suggest getting this as a solution to wintery blues. Ah yes, just what I wanted. The soundtrack to brooding solitude.

These are all slightly older tracks, not sure how old, probably 2009. That’s ‘old’ in the world of beats. They’re all grainy and Anodyne-y, featuring fast paced stomping kick patterns, squashed flat with overdrive, hi hats that do not relent for a second, and screechy icy wind layers rearing their ugly heads. It’s like hearing Lakker’s Tundra all over again. You won’t find many melodics here though, it’s all the deepest darkest noize and melodies just aren’t dark enough. I knew a producer who made dark dubstep things, and considered the use of more than one note ‘happy’.

There are tracks that sidestep the beat clatter - 3rd one ‘Time to Kill’ emphasises low, rumbling samples, hinting at a chord but actually sounding like an industrial extractor fan. It’s all very industrial, this. Reminds me of AnD and those noise folk who enjoy a good groove every now and then. Hey, who needs a fire? Plonk this on, grasp your berry hooch firmly, and whirl around a bit.
