This, by the way, is the Powell track that samples Big Black, prompting that needlessly aggressive email from Steve Albini that ended up on a billboard. Powell fits the sample in pretty nicely, surrounding it with a pretty experimental heavy dance brew: acidic crackle all over the mix. Insomniac / Should’ve Been A Drummer is on XL Recordings.

7/10 Clinton Staff review, 15 October 2015
The recent Powell/Steve Albini spat reveals a lot about todays need for constant publicity and oversharing. If I’d contacted someone privately asking for sample clearance and received an Albini style reply it would have stayed private even if it were needlessly aggressive. Since when do we share private conversations all over the internet? When we see a marketing opportunity that’s when.
Powell and his lackey’s haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory here but ironically Powell’s music is just the sort of thing that should get Albini back into enjoying harsh industrial dance music. The thing is it’s a whole lot of fuss about what is a rather pedestrian track which only livens up when (presumably) Albini’s guitar is brought in particularly as they are joined with some wildly entertaining bleeps and debris. Throughout Albini’s voice is taken from a ‘banter’ section on Big Black's 'Pigpile' and repeated effectively.
Overleaf is a track which samples Alan Vega of Suicide. Powell should have published their private conversations too. This track is a more clanking beats with shards of guitar clatter nestling in with hard edged beats and bass so hard and heavy it’s giving me a headache.
