Mio Mio by Mio Mio is a platter of great funky power, pairing ‘Painted On The Corner’ with ‘Floral (Nude Mix)’. Another ‘secret artist’ debut from the world of underground club music. The idea is, you make a huge tune and all the house heads will yelp ‘this is sik!! who is this??’, a look of awe falling onto their face when they get ‘nobody knows’ as a reply. Who is this amazing musician? God? And so the rock star mythos seeps into the world of beats.
Anyway Mio Mio is one of them, these two tracks covering reasonably lengthy classic sorta house jams, the first around the same drum loop (that doesn’t progress a huge amount over the course..) with some sort of synth/sax hybrid over the top playing a sort of middle-eastern improv over the thing. That’s great, perhaps a little more emphasis on the groove beyond a little bit funky would have been good. It’s minimal. Over to the B, and the beat’s improved with some clicky perc detail and weird flangey clap, some dubby notes joining later on making it sound like a collab between Four Tet, Vakula and Deepchord.
If you’re gonna get this, get it for this side cuz the A’s a flawed pearl.
