Hieroglyphic Being joins forces with The Truth Theory Trio for a scuzzy tech jazz exploration that pushes Basic Channel tendencies into lo-fi territory whilst throwing in the blissful wandering characteristics of the likes of Drexciya. If your mind isn’t smashed wide open by sheer force, it will be after listening to this, Jamal Moss’ latest 12” on UAE’s Bedouin Records. It thumps, plinks and rasps, bypassing the ears and scratching at the grey matter directly. Hieroglyphic Being’s trademark meaty and saturated style of techno is here amplified and jammed over for a good 10+ minutes on side A, mixing between noisy hard kicks and layers of euphoric, drippy melodies, also lathered in overdrive. It’s sort of like if Aisha Devi collaborated with Container or something. Never trust my comparisons.
I’ll definitely attest to the jazzy elements here hinted at in the press release, the phrases emerging naturally in a continuous, improvisatory way. Not so sure what Sun Ra would have thought about this though. If his is the music of Saturn, this is the music of scorched Mercury. The B tune spends less time twinkling and slows it down a bit for some head-down repetition, still with the unfurling feel.
