ESB (you may know them as Elektronische Staubband) are a French trio. Funnily enough, the Tiersen of Tiersen / Laquierre / Poli is actually Yann Tiersen of Amelie fame, but here he puts down the violin and dives into the world of analogue synth-joy with his partners. Spacey and thoughtful jams on Bureau B.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 15 October 2015One of this lot is Yann Tiersen - don’t know who the other two are. Together they make maudlin electro-pop that could nicely sound track a chromatic relationship break up in Stockholm. Opener ‘Market’ is dark and moody with massive squelshy synths getting all agitated everywhere. This is big synth - I’m thinking M83 big - massive big walls of the things - on ‘Spoon’ there’s a wobbly element to them which helps. They repeat three upwardly mobile chords as metronomic drum machine is added. ‘The Flashlight’ has a bit of an early Human League/Kraftwerk thing going on. This could soundtrack Berlin. Basically to save all the waffle this is three middle aged men really getting down and enjoying their synths. It had little or nothing new to the history of electronic music but I imagine they enjoyed themselves.
