Debut full-length from MYMK, a Brazilian electronic producer. His music is neither tooled for the dancefloor or totally abstract: what it is, rather, is a texturally complex series of melodic pieces. Jeopardy oscillates between cold minimal ambience and bright twinklings, making for a rather compelling set. LP on Low Kick High Punch.
8/10 Laurie Staff review, 24 September 2015
MYMK is a Brazilian producer of not-dance-not-noise music. Then what is it? I’m still trying to work that out myself. Nor is there much information about the label Low Kick High Punch, apart from the fact that it’s based in Berlin - that’s probably all the context that you’re gonna get, but it sort of makes sense, the traditional dark sound of the city creeping into Jeopardy.
Apparently the creator gets records from yours truly, making this a nice case of music coming full-circle. What an oddball he must be. The LP is a strange combination of eerie ambience and the skittering, deprived remnants of intact percussive patterns, a place where tiny sounds reverberate in giant spaces and organic clicks assemble on a bed of synths that could easily be from a release on Line. A lot of it flows quite lyrically and unexpectedly, but when it does get regular it gets really good. ‘Non Accolade’ encompasses every element mentioned previously with a constant pulsing anchor, and ‘Wanderlust’ features a sequenced detuned synth topped with minor sizzle while solitary frequencies enter like smoky wisps. Comes with an excellent art insert that's halfway between waves and rocks.
