Rodinia have put together a wonderful rhythm-fest here for this LP. The two members started off with a jam on a stack of synth equipment, and later on added drums and other instruments. It feels like every aspect of the sound-field is in some way rhythmic, yet also a little ambient in texture. Drumside / Dreamside is released by now Again.

Rodinia started this whole gnarly kosmische box social off by jamming out some deviations on their synth equipment: they saw were things were going and sailed away forever, and later return to shore for the rhythmic overdubs. What you’re listening to on sides both drum and dream are a few upgrades, percussive or guitarified, that make this ever-so-slightly danceable affair feel airier, fuller, more brimming. “Drumside”, also known as side A in layman’s terms, uses swirling and often rather dizzying synths as a backdrop for a solid beat that shuffles and fills but keeps otherwise tangential sounds stuck together. The four tracks see the band carve aesthetics within aesthetics, getting locked into a crackling groove on “Part II” before making the most of muddy, watery effects on “Part III”, which squeaks like a lost, dub techno Folklore Tape.
Switch to dreamside, working new title droneside, and enjoy the same synth flutterings as subdued, beatless ballads: the first one squeaks busily with synth abstractions, but they soon submerge into a gorgeous new age piece on “Part II”, which borrows from the overloud kosmische rulebook. I heard somewhere that it's so nice to get stoned or something?
