Cereal Killer were too busy furiously slamming down tracks in the recording studio to think of a proper name for their band: or maybe their moniker gives a good sense of the care-free attitude evident in these four thrashing speed-punk track. No Life Till Cereal is limited to 250 7” copies on Agitated / Anti-Fade.
7/10 Robin Staff review, 22 December 2015
Cereal Killer make that thrashy, poppy kinda punk where the chords sound like yo-yos being gracelessly lifted back to their launch point. Unlike the twee and slightly more enjoyable likes of Menace Beach and Sauna Youth, of whom they sound a lot like, these Australians go for a slightly grungier tint, gnarling the vox and trundling basslines through the dirt -- and, because they’re part of the Oz scene, they go hard with a couple of psychy effects and brief sludgy breakdowns.
Over these four songs, Cereal Killer prove themselves to have a few musical ideas, but they’ve obviously decided to compact them into the triumphs of pop-punk. The way old-school rock solos treacle out of the third track like they would in a Sheer Mag song, while also supplying a treated psych intro and a hxc vocal line, you’d think they could be anyone they want. In the end, though, this shit relies on hooks and speed, and that’s all you need to know: heads will roll, and stuff.
