For a band named Girls Pissing On Girls Pissing, this group actually have quite a mellow sound to them. Scrying In Infirmary Architecture joins My Bloody Valentine-esque harmony vocals to a sort of avant-indie-folk-pop and some sideways screamo. Gatefold 12” vinyl packaged with an art book, on MUZAI Records.

7/10 Clinton Staff review, 10 September 2015

This memorably monikered New Zealand group have the capacity to be this years out of nowhere favourites but they make it as difficult as possible for the casual listener. Initially, excited I checked out one of their videos. All was going fine until they broke out the saxophone. The album is something different though, not everyone starts an album with several minutes of found dialogue and once the band kick in it’s terrifying.

My first impression was to imagine a boy/girl twee-pop band gone terribly, terribly bad. These chords on ‘A Failed Exorcism’ are fearsome and truly hark back to the early Sonic Youth early Swans idea of dirgey sludge. ‘The Twelfth House’ continues the gloom, it’s very reminiscent of terrifying antipodean 80’s bands like Plagal Grind and Small World Experience. Let’s just say it churns with the best of them.  They try to play pop songs but are stopped by their own sludginess. For a moment on ‘ A Fraud Abroad’ I decided I was playing it at the wrong speed. I was wrong, they really are this creepy. The album is always falling apart, it’s nasty -there's a horrible trio of songs in the middle that are extremely tough on the ears but then they do a track called ‘Ceramic Miscarriages’ and for a second sound almost jolly.

Then I find that sax track. It’s called ‘Rainbow Islands’ and has that woozy MBV thing going on and what could be mistaken for a lovely tune until that sax solo turns up and is one of the most horrid things I’ve heard all year. So, really it’s a pit of eerie dream pop/shoegaze and sludgy noise-rock but not at all for the faint hearted.
