From the sound of the music, and knowing Baldruin’s past interests, I’d hazard a guess that the Portal of this record’s title leads to some mystic other world…? At times this sounds like free-jazz played over synth-ambient music, but things never stay in one place for long. Spooky dramatics. Clear vinyl LP from Wounded Knife.

8/10 Laurie Staff review, 09 September 2015
Baldruin aka Johannes Schebler is one of the noisy ambients. It’s fairly beatless and driven by cloudy textures, but there’s an edge that’s at times snarling and gutteral - the noise creeps in everywhere. Sometimes it’s pure distortion, at others is the weird purr of a disembodied lion or the patter of dirt on an industrial fan. Whatever they are or are meant to be, they’re definitely through a unique Portal (hehe) to Schebler’s imagination.
There are synths everywhere, but they’re all wearing the masks of said lions, hard to see but just about noticeable. Schebler’s skill at crafting odd, unfamiliar sounds out of his environment is pretty much constantly amazing throughout Portal. But it’s a murky noir world, just listen to the hacked train tracks and whispered incantations during ‘Keine Korper, aber Seelen’ and try not to imagine this. Then a little beacon of niceness bursts out in the almost energetic ‘Tanz der Elektronen’, which I’m pretty sure means ‘Electronic Dance’, mimicking the house/techno world with cute little synth loops and a hazy sheen. When you flip back over, you’re reminded that there’s ‘No Escape’, and doomy organs grind away at you, his voice all crackled and foreboding. It’s slightly too obvious in it’s darkness though, like if a super-serious director tried to make an 80s horror classic in the present day with tongue nowhere near cheek.
These are rare moments though, and don’t detract from the great, great moments on here.
