Heavy + Heavy = Heavy appears to be the formula behind this ‘supergroup’: members of Converge, ISIS, Mamiffer (and so on) have gotten together to produce another record of blasted fury music. NO was first released in 2012, but Old Man Gloom have seen fit to reissue it on Hydra Head. Double LP.

9/10 gbar Customer review, 14th November 2017

Old Man Gloom is the brainchild of Isis (the band) frontman Aaron Turner, Nate Newton (from Converge), Santos Montano and Caleb Scofield from Cave In (amongst others), and on 2012's 'NO', Turner and co. shows no signs of resting upon the legacy which they helped to create. From the moment which the instrumental opener "Grand Inversion" flows right into the chugging riffs of "Common Species", your attention will be immediately grabbed. The vocals of Turner are guttural and echoes Isis when they were at their most dysfunctional and aggressive, and the production (courtesy of Kurt Ballou) gives 'NO' a raw sound that is balanced with a cinematic construction, such as on the opening sections of "Shadowed Hand" and "Rats". What makes "NO" the most extreme output by OMG is that it continuously disorientates the listener and unsettles the stereotypical formulas of metal music.
