Early days Sun Ra here with Super-Sonic Jazz, reportedly only his second album (out of a surely triple-figure total). Dating from 1956, the sounds are not quite as ‘out’ as later explorations, but there is already a clear and present strangeness amidst the tunes. Remastered and repressed on Poppydisc.

Super-Sonic Jazz is not nearly as avant garde as Sun's albums became. This album documents Sun's earlier more traditional work. Those of you who didn't know that the master of big band free jazz could swing and play the blues should check this stuff out. I love Sun Ra's more demanding and avant garde material from the sixties, seventies and eighties, but this album is very cool. You can tell Sun's fancy is just beginning to take flight, in that he's starting to add different rhythms and instrumentation and more exotic harmony to his repertoire.
