Fennesz of course is a cherished artist in electronic/ experimental music. OZmotic is a name that’s new to me but appears to be the duo of Stanislao Lesnoj (Soprano sax, visual, electronics) and SmZ (drums, objects and electronics). Together they join Fennesz on guitar and electronics for an album with so much going on I’ve no idea where to begin.
Together they conjure strange and mysterious places through processed sounds but what really sets this apart from your usual manipulated found sounds, field recordings, electronics affair is the addition of the soprano saxophone on a few tracks which creates an almost sleazy Lynchian dimension that at times is like a hallucinatory alternative to Ornette Coleman’s ‘Naked Lunch’ soundtrack. There’s collaged samples of dialogue about economics and globalisation, glitchy beats, chirping insects and so on.
The closing ‘Epilogo’ in particular struck me as being quite touching with some haunting spoken word dialogue over a backdrop of shimmering ambient towards the final moments. Initially available on CD with a vinyl edition to follow.
