The Sorcerers are made up from legends of the Leeds jazz and world music scene. Their eponymous debut takes in influences from Ethiopian Jazz, European horror film scores from the ‘60s and ‘70s and British library music. Ethiopian jazz legend, Mulatu Astatke, Quinton Scott of Strut records and Late Junction presenter Nick Luscombe have championed the band. The album was recorded in ATA records own analogue studio to give the music some analogue authenticity. Opening track Pinch Of The Death Nerve was made “Beat Of The Week” by BBC 6 Music’s Huey Morgan.

8/10 Laurie Staff review, 06 August 2015
The Sorcerors are an instrumental ensemble of Ethio-library-giallo groove purveyors, but what do they conjure? Hot, hot jazz. Apparently they’ve got roots in the Leeds jazz scene as well as the ‘world music’ scene, so they’re from Earth after all, which does clear a couple of things up as we know some of these jazzers are from Saturn and other dimensions, etc.
The group apparently got together to put together a few tracks for an ATA records compilation which then coalesced into an album, this one, which is a nice story. Casual, humble beginnings. The LP, recorded at the ATA HQ, tracks a pathway through afrobeat, funk, and some rather straight jazz which doesn’t change key 5 times per bar. This gives it firmly rooted grooves that even the pink panther would lose his cool to, indeed, they’ve got a thumbs up from Mr Peterson so they’re pretty much set for cool cred. Strong brassy lead lines proudly swagger atop thwacky wah guitars and steady drums. It’ll be right at home at the drinking establishments, the rigidness occasionally falling away to be replaced by weird haunted house chords and wandering solo sections. They’re pretty good at what they do, even though what they do do isn’t as groundbreaking as other Leeds College of Music bands such as Ikestra. One for the jazz and funk fans.
