Chelsea Wolfe uses her fifth album to plumb the depths of the subconscious, via the medium of music that alternates between her intimate, close mic-ed murmurs and crashing heavy rock action. There is a strong sense of purpose in Abyss’ brutal contrasts: Wolfe has made a very good record here. On Sargent House.

8/10 Jack Customer review, 11th September 2016
Dark themes throughout, Abyss takes you on a journey both musically and lyrically. There isn't any happy music here, but that is a compliment to Chelsea Wolfe's craft. If you are in the mood for some 'dark relaxing,' then this is the album for you. Some of the songs are better than others, but they all fit together very well, creating a feeling of true continuity. The result is a powerful album experience that should be listened through in full sittings (with headphones) rather than in short spurts.
