Let's Get Free by Dead Prez

Yes yes yes, the hard and heavy 2000 debut from political hip-hop crew Dead Prez reissued on Get Down. Let’s Get Free speaks on Black Nationalism and murderous white racism, backed with thick and chunky analogue basslines. There is even a sighting of a young Kanye West, whose remix of ‘It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop’ turns up on the fourth side of this 2LP.

8/10 Penrith Steve 1st July 2015

"Let's Get Free" by Dead Prez was a breath of fresh hip-hop air when it came out in 2000. It was when Eminem was at the height of his powers so it was great to have a genuinely great hip-hop record to listen to. It's politically charged and they speak on behalf of the oppressed. "We sick of workin' for crumbs and fillin' up the prisons/Dyin' over money an relyin' on religion for help" from "Police State", kinda tells you where they're coming from. The best track on here is the single, "Hip Hop" a drum machine set against a deep buzz. Classic stuff.
