Black Channels present their first release, a 10”. EP demonstrates what they do: these are cinematic songs coated with a mysterious aesthetic, velvet darkness lurking around every corner. Tape loops and manipulated female vocals are some of the elements that set up this atmospheric vibe. On Death Waltz Originals.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 14 July 2015
I don’t know who these two are but they certainly make a sound that will appeal to many of you. Opener ‘Oracles’ has textured dark electronics overlaid by hushed vocals. They use all those vintage synth sounds you like and it’s hard not to make quick comparisons to Death and Vanilla. There’s more to it though than simple retro-tronics - the chorus is a busy affair with scattershot drums and the song wanders around hither and thither.
Overleaf ‘Depth of Field’ is darker and more disturbing with echoey landscapes, found clatters and dark pulsating bass. There’s also a closing instrumental piece that exemplifies their abilities to make eerie drone-scapes that shows influence for the myriad of soundtrack releases from parent label Death Waltz.
