The Gaslight Anthem have made a name, and a fanbase for themselves by channelling the politics and sound of vintage Bruce Springsteen into a slightly more punk-rock mould. The 59' Sound is their second record, the one that really made an impact for them, and here we have it reissued in delicately translucent blue vinyl. On SideOne Dummy.

- The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem
6/10 Penrith Steve 14th July 2015
The Gaslight Anthem were always destined for the big time with their Springsteen-meets-The Replacements sound. They probably sound more like the Gin Blossoms than either of those bands though. "The '59 Sound" is their second album and it's okay, I suppose. I like bits of it if I'm honest but it's all a bit too trying-to-be-earnest-rock'n'roll. "Great Expections" was one of the singles taken from the album and is probably the best track. The refrain "Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night" from the title track really ramps up the Springsteen cars, girls and drag strips cliche. This is destined for the mainstream but still sits just outside it, I think.
