Hailing from the economically barren Portuguese coast, 10000 Russos create haunting, droning and scary psychrock. Inspired by didgeridoos and empty shopping malls, their self-titled debut brings six tracks and 43 minutes of thumping drums and unsettling groaning. In other words, a welcome guest in today’s psych-scene. Limited white vinyl release.

8/10 Robin Staff review, 22 July 2015

I’ve got psych rock fever, in so far as I have hay fever and I’m listening to psych rock. The psych in question is the work of 10000 Russos, a Portuguese crew of smoke ‘n’ mirrors rockers who keep themselves at an echoing, lo-fi distance as their riffs circle the drain and drone into the sewers. The hay fever is mainly just me sneezing. The band’s self-titled record is a slow, measured slog onwards into oblivion that’s mainly compelling due to its foggy, almost ambient presentation; a kind that makes it feel like much more than just another crystalline space rock record. I took some tablets for the hay fever, they worked; the psych rock is still there, though.

The distortion is strong in this one, used as its own source of storytelling; on the opening track it sounds like a ghost making the standard noises of hauntology, while on the second the band scour distortion over a steamy beat to create a busy, chaotic atmosphere a la Dirty Beaches on ‘Drifters’. Something about this noise feels alien for a band like this; for similar artists like Carlton Melton and Blown Out, riffs are cleaned and clarified as a point of show ‘n’ tell, but 10000 Russos make their repeated motifs sound like the only constants in an ugly world.

Some conventions gotta get that lip service, and the second side of the record feels more reverent to textbook psych: the scattershot noise is still there, but you can hear riffs and bass grooves interlocking on “Baden Baden Baden”, which sounds like that Dream Police record playing out a calmer tempo. Ultimately, though, this is a strangely refreshing record, one that charms me with its total disinterest in charming me.
