Drinks appears to be the bizarro-side-project of Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley, in which they cast aside their usual singer-songwriter / hardcore punk focuses and get unusual. Hermits On Holiday is the initial example of their unexpected sound, out in advance of the full album of the same name. Enjoyably odd 7”, on Heavenly.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 09 July 2015
Drinks are Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley. Both have surnames that could suggest that they are related to someone famous but they are not. They are sorta semi-famous in their own right though, Le Bon as quirky folk singer-songwriter Presley as White Fence dude.
They debut with 'Hermits On Holiday' which if you didn't tell me the year before, I might suggest is a long lost minimalist post punk classic by someone like the Raincoats, the Slits or Young Marble Giants. It features just scratchy guitar and Le Bon's high-pitched vocal, and lots of clattery percussion. Overleaf, 'Eighteen Teenage Revenge Pair' is more upbeat and more realised but still with that all important element of quirk. Both sing this time, the guitars are still very scratchy and there's an alarming organ solo.
Really interesting stuff and bodes well for the forthcoming album.
