Morgan Louis kicks the White Material label back into action, with a brand new 12”, titled Only 1. Four tracks on here, pulsing their way through some compelling low-down dance action. With the right crowd, this could really take over bodies. Three locked grooves on the record too, if you really want to drive the crowd to infinity.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 08 July 2015
Repetition repetition repetition repetition. The Fall’s recent appearance on Glastonbury at times showed repetition as an art form - how a simple groove when looped ad nauseum can provoke a kind of ecstatic reaction amongst an audience.
The opener here ‘Only 1’ provokes a very similar reaction. It uses a low end loop with some tumbling percussion and simply fades a hi-end blip in and out, yet I’m mesmerised. At one point a kick drum drops out and when it re-appears it’s kind of... dare I say... orgasmic? (We stepped well away from Clint at this point - Ed.) It’s the power of doing absolutely nothing at all -- when something does happen, it’s thrilling. It also features the quickest fade out in recorded music history before ‘3Sex’ drifts in -- these are barely beats, just the sound of a factory hum calibrated to being in 4/4 time.
Over on the other side ‘Donno‘ is relatively busy, its eeriness reminding me of Demdike Stare but far more beat driven. The final ‘Not U I Won’t 123‘ brings a hitherto unseen warmth to proceedings. If the rest of the tracks are cold techno grey this is a beautiful yellow driven along in a warm and sunny split second rhodes sample. Very impressive and creative stuff all round.
