Following well-received EP’s on 100% Silk and Lunar Disko, Berlin-based Vertical67 unveils his debut album of melancholy electronica. Warm, analogue and full of sombre melody Panta Rhei delivers the heaviest of nods to Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Nostalgic mood music that hits the spot. Includes a remix by Wisp (Rephlex Records). Out on CD from Photic Fields. Limited to 150.

7/10 Laurie Staff review, 17 June 2015

Our Joan, who art in heaven, read this as ‘Panda Rhei’, which sounds a lot more cute, it’s true. Is a panda eating rye bread a good mental image for an ambient electronic CD? Review derail imminent. Abandon ship.

Vertical67 is a name & number of a certain Berlin-dwelling man, who seems to prefer being nameless online but forgot about liner notes, so check them if you want to track him down or whatever, weirdos. Panta Rhei is a 90s ambient techno created and released in the present day, its influences and homages laid bare. It comprises drum machine grooves underneath vintage-sounding synths playing little playful phases bathed in reverb and a faint touch of sadness.

The comparisons are obvious - early Aphex Twin and Ekoplekz, or Chris Clark if he’s in a chill mood - and don’t entirely work against it, but it’s hard to see the unique edge of Vertical67 through it all. Who are you? What do you represent? That’s a silly question to ask, because the answer is just calming reflection, which I’m sure a lot of people out there will want to hear within a Warp-y Rephlex context.
