9/10 The Doc 8th August 2016
Marvellously complex avant-garde compositions here from ex-Magazine man and original Bad Seed Barry Adamson. Moss Side Story is the soundtrack to a film-noir set in Manchester's notorious inner-city shithole, with the only rub being that the film doesn't exist - except in Adamson's head. There are some really great atmospherics in here - screams, sirens, breaking glass tinkling over spaced-out soundscapes, with a whole dollop of crazy jazz-type stylings screeching and whirling around over the top of it.
He conjures the Manchester vibe perfectly - rain, fog, tower blocks, streetlights that don't work, burnt out cars, desolate urban spaces - and it's so effective visually that you come away from it feeling it's a shame no one's ever picked his brain and got him to direct the film It's a really intelligent record, musically and sonically, and it's dense as hell to boot so is worthy of playing over and over again. Very, very good indeed.
