Theo Parrish can blow hot and cold, his last album 'American Intelligence' divided opinion. It was indulgent, patchy and bloody expensive, yet carried some stand out tracks that would be a career pinnacle for many producers - Footwork - for example remains a killer tune.
Here is Theo on form, in fact this is his live band 'The Unit' who he has been touring with. Featuring a talented cast including the criminally underrated Amp Fiddler they have been giving a live jazz funk and broken beat flavour to Theo's studio tracks and covering some staples of his sets.
Two tracks here, starting with a cover of Skye's 'Ain't No Need' which will be familiar to those who picked up the recent Under The Influence 4 compilation on Joey Negro's Z Records label. This is a funky dancer in this case given a lighter feel than the original, you can imagine this going down a storm if Gilles Peterson dropped it in the middle of a set.
On the flip is a cover of Theo's own track 'Walking Thru The Sky'. Again this harks back to the nu-jazz broken beat sound that seemed set to go large in the mid 00's. The jazz, boogie and funk is preeen
