Limited pressing, self-released 3 track CD. Inga Copeland hits again under a different moniker, and away from Hype Williams her experimentation has been boundless. Under the Lolina name she pushes the R’n’B grooves and discordant piano riffs even further than Copeland. Relaxin’ is perhaps an inaccurate title for these, frankly disconcerting pop songs.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 03 June 2015
Inga Copeland just won’t put her name on stuff. Not a single word is written on the outside of this CD. I don’t know how people keep getting away with this. Imagine going into your local sweet shop and the ‘Double Decker’s have no info at all on them? Aaaanyway eventually located within the bowels of the artwork is the word Lolina which is the current alias of Inga Copeland once of Hype Williams.
The music is challenging and disorientating. It’s generally in the ballpark of early Tricky with with strange lopsided beats and clattery electronics, Copelands voice mutters atop making this into the weirdest R&B you’ve ever heard. The second track ...ermm… no titles sorry.... is kind of like Rhianna doing her own production….blindfolded with discordant synth stabs. Finally there are some time stretched vocals leading into a track which sounds like it’s tumbled down a rockery.
How anyone could relax to this I’d never know. Comes on that most retro and hipster-friendly formats - the 3 track CD single.
