Jaakko Eino Kalevi is a Finnish producer / singer-songwriter whose self-titled record shows off a smooth neo-R&B kind of sound. The album is out on Weird World as CD, LP, or special indies-exclusive LP edition with a bonus 7” and a comic that delves into Jaakko’s mythical personal history! You know you need that.
6/10 Clinton Staff review, 11 June 2015
I should have just cut and pasted my reviews this week..."slick ‘80’s vibes, sophisticated pop." That would have saved me some time. Its the bloody War on Drugs isn’t it - those blighters. And I’m sure Wild Beasts are not completely blameless in all this.
So this really doesn’t sound unlike last weeks Daughn Gibson record; it has sleek rhythms, atmospheric keys and murmured vocals. It worships smooth wine bar r&b inflected pop. It’s a bit murkier and plays less to the stadium dynamics than Gibson but it's still incredibly Ferry. ‘Double Talk’ is particularly evocative with some nice clipped instrumentation, wobbly synths and softly sung vocals. ‘Deeper Shadows’ has more of a Ghostbox-styled vintage synth lead which made Phil’s ears prick up for a moment. It’s soon joined though by some ghostly Womans Hour styled slinky-voiced R & B.
I don’t mind this record at all, it will sound pretty nice when relaxing in a bar on a sunny day sipping a shandy. It’s not Jaakko Eino Kalevi’s fault that I’ve heard four or five very similar records over the last few hours and from the sounds we've heard today you’d think that the music of Michael McDonald has had much more of a cultural impact than that of Johnny Rotten. Come on people let’s show a bit of grit and excitement. I’m still too young to listen to music this old.
