You might well know Evan Caminiti from his work in droning guitar duo Barn Owl: this latest solo LP presents a more electronic side to his sound, working with synth systems. Deep caverns of tone and click, moving slowly forwards towards who-knows-what end. Meridian is released on CD and LP by Thrill Jockey.

8/10 Laurie Staff review, 17 June 2015

This person here called Evan is half of that there band called Barn Owl. Not entirely sure what they’re like, but sources say one word - drone, the word of the decade. Just so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

From what I gather, he’s come from a band-oriented background and made the inevitable shift towards electronic sounds, distancing himself from the humble guitar. Have no fear though, there hasn’t been a recognisable traditional instrument yet, just a shapeshifting wall of synth textures, sporadic airy percussion hits and cut up environments partitioned into a sweet suite. Caminiti is pretty adept at this whole synthesis malark, conjuring up thick bass drones, electric rasps and horn-like lead melodies that build and die in a huge inverting tapestry.

It’s concise, dynamic ambient that doesn’t drone away with the same sine waves for 40 mins, giving your ears the pepper they need, drawing you towards an intensive listen rather than the ‘set and forget’ of some more reserved ambient. A recent comparison would be Leafcutter John’s LP Resurrection, with its spiralling intensity and poised tone. Very good stuff.

10/10 Thomas Customer review, 16th June 2015
