Crystal Dorval, the woman behind White Poppy and a great name, went to a farm in Vancouver for nine months on her own to write Natural Phenomena. I’ve heard of bands having more fun writing an album but White Poppy’s mix of glistening synth and layered vocal humming isn’t meant to be fun. It is, as the LP title suggests, something which feels natural, something that envelops you in those layers of beautiful and strange sound and takes you away with it. It’s bizarre and hazy but with some very coherent instrumentation running through its core which drives everything forward nicely.
