It Hugs Back present Slow Wave, the latest example of their exploration of the sounds at their talented fingertips. Here they target a gorgeous sweeping chamber pop, with layer upon layer of instrumental craft building up in each track. And ‘slow’ is indeed the name of the game. CD and LP versions are available, on Safe & Sound.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 11 June 2015
‘Play twice before listening’ was the old Silver Apples adage and it’s so terribly true. Our reviews should often come with a caveat that the record has only been listened to once in a busy office with people screaming over the top of it.
This is one such album that isn’t going to shout at you across the rooftops and instead it’s a slow burner of a record that sits somewhere between Tindersticks, shoe-gaze and dream pop. The melodies are unhurried, the vocals whispered and laconic. We must allow time for records like this to grow and if you do you’ll be rewarded with some very pleasant lush pop. I’m particularly enjoying ‘Happy Birthday’ with its fragrant guitars and yearning vocals. Everything is strummy and sparkly, guitars glisten but melodies are apologetic - you need to go find them - we can’t do all the work for you. Mostly it reminds me of past dream poppers such as Butterfly Child and late period AR Kane.
The album’s mood is defined by the title of track 4 ‘Somnolence’. Please do not listen to whilst operating heavy machinery - this is much more suited to a mid afternoon snooze.
